Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the ground beef and cook for 5-7 minutes, breaking it apart as it browns. Drain excess fat if needed.
- 02
Add the diced onion to the skillet and cook for 2 minutes until softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
- 03
Pour in the crushed tomatoes and beef broth. Stir in 1 teaspoon dried oregano, 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes, and a pinch each of salt and black pepper.
- 04
Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer uncovered for 10-12 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
- 05
Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Tear in fresh basil leaves just before serving.
- 06
Serve the beef and tomato sauce in shallow bowls with thick slices of toasted or grilled crusty bread for dipping.
Spice Tips
For deeper warmth, add 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika with the oregano. If you like heat, increase the red pepper flakes to 1/2 teaspoon or finish with a pinch of cayenne. A splash of red wine (1/4 cup) added with the broth adds richness and complexity.
