Ingredients

  • 1 poundground beef
  • ·yellow onion
  • ·garlic
  • 1 can (28 oz)canned crushed tomatoes
  • ½ cupbeef broth
  • 1 teaspoondried oregano
  • ·salt
  • ·black pepper
  • 2 tablespoonolive oil
  • 1 loafcrusty bread

Prep

  1. 01

    Dice 1 medium yellow onion.

  2. 02

    Mince 3 cloves garlic.

Method

  1. 01

Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up as it browns, about 5 minutes. Drain excess fat if needed.

  2. 02

Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook, stirring, for 2 minutes until fragrant.

  3. 03

Pour in the crushed tomatoes and beef broth. Stir in 1 teaspoon dried oregano, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper.

  4. 04

Bring to a simmer and cook uncovered for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly and flavors meld.

  5. 05

While the sauce simmers, slice the crusty bread and toast or grill the slices until golden.

  6. 06

Taste the skillet and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as needed. Serve the beef and tomato sauce in bowls alongside the garlic toast for dipping.

Spice Tips

For warmth, add 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes to the skillet with the garlic. For more depth, stir in 1 tablespoon tomato paste in step 2. Fresh basil or parsley scattered on top brightens the finish.

For extra flavor, rub the warm toast with a cut garlic clove before serving. Leftovers keep in the fridge for 3 days and reheat beautifully.
