- 1½ teaspooncumin
- 1 teaspoonsmoked paprika
- ¼ teaspooncayenne pepper
- 1lime
- ½ cupchicken broth
- 1 teaspoonkosher salt
- ½ teaspoonblack pepper
- ·cilantro
- 2scallion
Prep
- 01
Dice 2 medium sweet potatoes into 3/4-inch cubes.
- 02
Dice 1 medium yellow onion.
- 03
Mince 4 cloves garlic.
- 04
Mince 1 jalapeño (seed it first if you prefer less heat).
- 05
Slice 2 scallions. Roughly chop a handful of cilantro.
Method
- 01
Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground turkey, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Cook for 5–7 minutes until browned and mostly cooked through. Drain excess fat if needed and season with salt and pepper.
- 02
Push the turkey to the side of the skillet. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon oil to the empty space. Add the diced sweet potato and diced onion. Let them sit undisturbed for 2–3 minutes to char, then stir and cook for another 4–5 minutes until the sweet potato begins to soften at the edges.
- 03
Stir in the minced garlic and minced jalapeño. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- 04
Add the cumin, smoked paprika, and cayenne pepper. Stir to coat everything evenly and cook for 30 seconds.
- 05
Pour in the chicken broth and scrape up any browned bits from the skillet. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes until the sweet potato is tender.
- 06
Squeeze the lime over the skillet and toss everything together. Taste and adjust seasoning. Top with cilantro and sliced scallion. Serve immediately.
Spice Tips
For a gentler heat, reduce the cayenne to 1/8 teaspoon or omit it entirely. For serious spice, add a pinch of red pepper flakes or another diced jalapeño. A splash of hot sauce at the end adds tangy fire if your guests like it.
Serve as-is with lime wedges, or spoon over cooked rice to soak up the bright, spiced pan sauce. Leftovers keep refrigerated for up to 3 days.
